The brief

Macro-Advisory provides in-depth financial and geopolitical intelligence to clients operating across some of the world's more complex regions. The platform needed to deliver the right content to the right subscriber automatically, based on their subscription, without them needing to log in and go looking for it.

The geographic scope covered four regions: Russia, the Caucasus, Central Asia and CIS Europe. Each required a full access tier and a trial equivalent, plus the ability for corporate accounts to manage multiple users. Eight membership levels in total, each controlling what a subscriber sees on-site, what they can download, and what lands in their inbox.

The driving principle: push intelligence to users, rather than waiting for them to come looking for it.

The work

The platform was built on WordPress with Elementor Pro handling the front-end and MemberPress managing access control. That combination creates a modular architecture where content, users and permissions operate independently, and the system scales as new regions or content types are added.

Content was reorganised into clearly defined categories: Macro Monthly, Politics Monthly, Sanctions and Conflict Sitrep, Special Reports and Geopolitics. Those categories structure the site, drive the access rules, and power the email system.

  • Eight membership levels across four regions, full and trial
  • MemberPress rules tied to content categories and file access
  • Per-region RSS feeds connected to Mailchimp segments
  • Automated email dispatch triggered on content publication
  • Dynamic messaging: trial users receive different copy from full members
  • Trial expiry flow: welcome, follow-up, then clean transition to inactive
  • Corporate account structure built and ready for activation

A gated member portal using a similar model appears in the UK Director Magazine build, applied to a regional media brand.

How the email system works

The email automation is where the platform earns its complexity. Each membership tier maps to a Mailchimp segment through merge tags. Each content category carries its own RSS feed. When new content is published, Mailchimp reads the relevant feed and dispatches the campaign automatically, only to subscribers whose membership matches. The content drives it, with no manual sending or list management.

Trial subscribers receive the same regional content with different messaging, set through dynamic content blocks. When a trial expires, the user is tagged inactive and steps out of the active flow cleanly, remaining available for future re-engagement without cluttering live segments.

A separate onboarding sequence runs for new trial users: welcome on sign-up, follow-up after one day, conversion email as the trial closes.

The outcome

The platform operates as a connected system. Publishing a piece of content triggers the full sequence: access rules determine who can see it on-site, and email automation dispatches it to the right subscribers, within the same workflow and without manual intervention.

For subscribers, updates arrive in the inbox targeted precisely to their region and tier. The intelligence finds them.

For the business, the architecture scales cleanly. New regions, content types or membership tiers slot in without rebuilding the underlying logic. The site feels straightforward. The system behind it is not.
